The Pen and Ink Drawings of Earl Biss
From the richness of the permanent collection, Assistant Curator Carole Klein
has selected 52 black and white drawings by artist Earl Biss (1947-1998) to
display. Most measure 9 x 12 inches and explore the expressionistic nuance of
shadow and light affected by dark ink on paper. Acquired in 2004, these images
are on view at Gilcrease Museum for the first time.
A variety of themes present themselves - warriors in the Montana landscape of
the Crow Reservation, people going about everyday farming tasks or waiting for
a train, individuals coping with pain and sorrow, and horses, particularly spotted ones, creating a line of rhythmic movement across the page. While Biss is primarily known for his paintings, these small slices of life bear close scrutiny. There is nothing flat or static about
his pen strokes, and in many, the ink application offers a paint-like texture.
The pieces were produced in 1992 and 1993.

Newborns in Need -
Each year, nearly 19,000 Oklahoma infants are born into poverty. The families of these infants have trouble affording basic needs like diapers and baby wipes, blankets, bottles, clothing, car seats, strollers and more.
To help these families and infants in need, the University of Phoenix in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Norman, Reasor's, the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, TulsaPeople, KRAV 96.5 FM, Abuelo's Restaurants and American Bikers Aiming Toward Education are sponsoring the 5th annual "Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need" events in May.
"There are no public funds available to buy most of these goods for newborns in poverty," said Karen Jacobs, OKDHS volunteer coordinator, "and, even with the generosity of donations from the public, we most often receive goods for children who are out of the infant and toddler stage. The early years of a child's life are so vital, and items specifically for newborn care can help to provide the healthy start that all children deserve."
In an effort to shower these newborns in need, the public is invited to donate baby items to the state's largest baby shower. Donated items could include disposable diapers, booties, bibs, hooded bath towels, washcloths, shirts, bottles, baby powder, receiving blankets, pacifiers, bouncy seats, coats and hats.
Unwrapped items may be dropped at any University of Phoenix location, including the Oklahoma City campus at 6501 Broadway Ext., the Tulsa campus at 10810 E. 45th St., Suite 103, and the Norman campus at 1370 N. Interstate Dr. Donations also will be accepted at TulsaPeople, 1603 S. Boulder Ave.

Young at Heart; PG, 107 min,
DescriptionThe true story of the final weeks of rehearsal for the Young at Heart Chorus in Northampton, MA, whose average age is 81, and many of whom must overcome health adversities to participate. Their music is unexpected, going against the stereotype of their age group, performing songs, for example, by James Brown, and Sonic Youth. Although they have toured Europe and sang for royalty, this account focuses on preparing new songs, not an easy endeavor, for a concert in their home town, which succeeds in spite of several real heart breaking events. We are offering retirement community groups of 3 or more a discounted group ticket price of only $5.00 per person. A portion of all ticket sales will go to RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program)! For information on additional show dates and times, please contact Circle Cinema 10 South Lewis, 585-FILM.
